The artistry work of Karl Wilkes exemplifies qualities of reality, spirituality, and mystical ideas. Its content is derived from his African American heritage. He concentrates on vision, ideas, and images from yesterday, today, and tomorrow to make the most effective aesthetic statement. Furthermore, Wilkes repertoire includes teaching art and history to seventh and eighth graders, college students nationwide, and organizations throughout the Department of Defense. Wilkes also uses his acclaim in a philanthropic manner to teach Black History and its relationship to America worldwide.

Collectors of Karl Wilkes range from the former President of the United States George W. Bush 2nd to Barack Obama, Oprah Winfrey, The Late Artist formally known as Prince to Muhammad Ali to Jay Leno, James Brown, and the late King of Pop, Michael Jackson. His art has affected many people and cultures, both known and unknown. He often donates much of it to help raise money for underprivileged children and other causes (such as research for breast cancer and diabetes).

He recently received 8 Karl W. Wilkes Day all with being awarded Key to the City in Las Vegas, NV, Columbia SC, Minneapolis MN, Miami, FL, Atlanta GA, Macon, GA, Augusta GA, Los Angeles, CA. In particular, the Karl W. Wilkes Day were in Las Vegas in recognition of Black History Month on February 10, 2010, and in Minneapolis, was the first artist to receive the Key to the City for the reconstruction and design of the City Seal on February 8, 1997.

Wilkes works have been exhibited at major galleries and museums -Harriet Tubman Museum, #12 Gallery London England, Wong Museum of Art, Great American History Museum Theater Minneapolis Mn., Atomic Museum in Las Vegas, Nevada for the first time ever in the history of the Museum.

About the artist – Karl Wilkes

Wilkes was born in Fort Bragg, North Carolina.  His first career assignment on his artist journey, he was the personal artist to the Mother of the Civil Rights Movement Rosa Parks. From that point he created his masterpiece, History Lesson #5 was presented at the United Nations as a special guest of Gwendolyn Moran of Trinidad and Tobago.

Karl Wilkes was chosen by Pepsi and Scholastic Inc. as the focal point of a national curriculum that aims to help students explore African American experience and achievement. This program and History Lesson #5 has been endorsed by Chief Whip of the United States Congressman James Clyburn and Congress of the United States.

He was on tour sponsored by the Pentagon and US Military Departments of Defense to Exhibit at military bases through the United States. The Aspire to Rise Tour of the 105 Historical Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) is part of the White House Initiative on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity through Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

In addition, Wilkes has been recognized for his ability to capture his art in almost photographic quality. His work distinguishing characteristic has helped him receive several awards nationally and internationally. These awards include the International American Art Award (Europe), and the International Arts Festival (Seoul, Korea). Wilkes is also a two-time recipient of the NAACP Image Award Clemson University, South Carolina), Lowes Hero 2010-2018. Wilkes recently developed a Black History Month Program for Burger King Corporation and is the first artist in US history to petition his artwork for release as American currency of the Harriet Tubman $20.00 bill.
